Abstract Expressionism

A popular trend in the late 1950s began with a handful of artists known as the Abstract Expressionists. The technique depicted shapes and lines to form a reality outside of the conventional norm. The idea behind abstract expressionism was evoke a spiritual and emotional response as well as a revolutionary approach to traditional painting.

Manuel Fernandez uses abstract expressionism throughout his work in which he "explores the relationship between calligraphic writing and pictorial image." His work also consists of elements such as wind and water to create a more atmospheric piece.
