The Convertible Stair Ramp

Posted by Lyemium Editorial on May 29, 2013
A home accessibility design concept to make your entrance more accessible.

Designed by Chan Wen Jie the design concept is built with the idea of a "dual function stairs" which could then transform into a ramp. The idea here is to reduce the space necessary for a dedicated ramp.

The theory of the design, is that when one steps onto a switch, the steps will then convert into a ramp. While the design concept is interesting by nature, the idea of having someone step onto a switch to activate the ramp may not be wheelchair friendly and thus poses an accessibility issue.

A similar idea was introduced in Toronto for there transit service, on lift-equipped buses up until recent years where low-floor ramp transit became common. The idea is interesting in itself but we should also take into consideration the slope of the stairs, as steep stairs may also pose a design issue to the this concept.
