Moving forward this may be, arguably, one of the more interesting and exciting modules under development. If you have used Drupal for any period of time especially the older version you may have ran into several roadblocks in how media files from third party sites are displayed. The media module is to provide a framework for managing files and multimedia assets and it is commonly referred to as a 'file browser to the internet'. The media module is also making efforts to have certain features such as file entity available in core for the upcoming Drupal 8 release.
One of the newer modules on the scene the apps module provides a new option for packaging and providing features. Similar to the features module the Apps module can be used as in installation profile to speed the site building process. The Apps project page highlights apps as:

Pathologic is an input filter which can correct paths in links and images in your Drupal content in situations which would otherwise cause them to “break;” for example, if the URL of the site changes, or the content was moved to a different server. Pathologic can also solve the problem of missing images and broken links in your site’s RSS feeds
