In Sickness and in Health

We pilot our very existence through the urban infrastructure of our contemporary world, interacting with buildings and forming unconscious relationships with them. Through my work I have explored the profound association present between the general human experience and the hospital setting. Medical institutions are established to support and maintain the health of a society through a diverse range of situations; welcoming the joy of a new life whilst caring for those which are sadly coming to a close.

Despite the intensive connection between hospitals and the human condition, they are characteristically harsh in their architectural design. As function takes precedence over form we are left with confronting and emotionally unforgiving structures. My work investigates the patterns, textures and visual archetypes pertaining to 1950’s hospital architecture and the human body.
