Edwin Lord Weeks, born in Boston, Massachusetts was a pupil of Léon Bonnat and of Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Throughout his life, Weeks took several trips to the East and is often seen as a painter of oriental scenes. The time frame of his paintings expanded through what would be known as the Mughal Empire. Weeks' paintings capture just a glimpse of daily life under dynasty rule of the Mughal Empire.
